In 2024, Becton Dickinson (BD) replaced the outdated fluorescent lighting in part of its factory in Madrid. The replacement lamps were becoming increasingly difficult to obtain due to the European ban on production and import. At the same time, the company wanted to significantly reduce its energy consumption. BD sought a solution that would not require production downtime and would maintain IP65 protection against dust and moisture. Once again, the choice fell on ETAP, which was able to guarantee a fast and circular approach.

In Spain, BD manufactures and sells medical devices, such as single-use syringes. The company had already worked with ETAP on the switch to LED in other buildings in Madrid. Technical reliability, the reuse of existing materials and experience with industrial environments were the deciding factors for this project.

Reliable lighting in a 24/7 production environment

Because the spaces are in continuous use, it was crucial that the relighting could be done quickly. Shutting down production or breaking open ceilings was not an option. That is why ETAP proposed a circular solution through refurbishment with U7 modules with LED+LENSTM.

The existing luminaire housing and cabling were retained. The protective cover, necessary to meet the IP65 requirements, could also be reused. Only the lamp and reflector were replaced by a U7 refurbishment module.

The emergency lighting was also upgraded. The original luminaires had built-in emergency lighting. For the LED renovation, ETAP opted for separate K2 luminaires. These autonomous luminaires offer a reliable solution in industrial environments and come with IP65 protection as standard.

The entire relighting took place during a planned production shutdown. This meant that nothing had to be changed in the normal operation of the factory.

More light, less energy consumption

BD now saves up to 70 percent energy, with a higher light level of 800 lux. And thanks to the circular approach, unnecessary waste was avoided. The new lighting is also reliable, meets all requirements and fits in perfectly with the continuous operation of the production process.
