LED lighting in Ivo Van Damme sports hall ensures optimal visibility

The municipality of Herent boasts an extensive sports infrastructure. One of the available venues is the Ivo Van Damme sports hall. The hall consists of three subcourts. The municipality of Herent aims to host sports events again at top international level in this sports hall. In order to make this possible, the inadequate lighting level - from 280 lux centrally to 170 lux on the sides of the room - had to be substantially increased. In fact, indoor sports competitions require 350, 500 or even 750 lux, depending on the sport and level.

High performance, low consumption

The municipality sought and found a partner in ETAP to take the lighting in the sports hall to the next level and meet the applicable lighting standards for (inter)national competitive sports. ETAP provides a total solution In the form of a C-LaaS agreement during the agreed contract period. In order to make sports hall Ivo Van Damme future-proof, ETAP installed individual E7 luminaires on a narrow cable channel. The E7 LED+LENSTM optics optimise athlete comfort with better distribution of the light lines and the available light not blinding the athletes.

The sports hall managers have the option of setting the light level for each subcourt. High lighting levels are not always necessary throughout the entire sports hall. Despite superior lighting performance, energy consumption drops. In the former setting, lighting consumed 144 kWh to generate an average of 240 lux. Currently 350 lux are achieved with 50% less energy consumption. Even at 750 lux, 10% less consumption was measured compared to the original scenario.
 

After-sales service unburdens
The Ivo Van Damme sports hall is now also fitted with the EMD Multidetector. The light switches off automatically once the sensor detects no motion/presence for 30 minutes. The lighting level also adjusts automatically depending on available daylight. This also contributes to more efficient lighting and energy consumption. ETAP provides excellent after-sales service. It is responsible for the maintenance and smooth functioning of the installation for a period of 10 years, with guaranteed lighting levels at constant energy consumption.
