The city of Sint-Niklaas consciously chose ETAP's Circular Light as a Service (C-LaaS) in 2021. C-LaaS means carefree light: ETAP supplies, manages and maintains the lighting.

For the city, this was a big plus. It wanted to be able to focus fully on its own activities, without worrying about the maintenance and operation of their lighting. Sustainability and a circular approach played a crucial role in this decision.

The collaboration began with the renewal of the lighting in the left wing of City Hall. ETAP conducted a lighting study according to the applicable standards and worked out a customised solution. The number of luminaires was reduced, but the lighting level increased from 300 to 500 lux.

ETAP also integrated Excellum, a smart lighting control system that automatically adjusts lighting based on presence and daylight. This provides additional energy savings and greater comfort. ESM was also installed, an intelligent emergency lighting system that automatically performs tests and detects defects.  

An adapted workplace requires smart lighting

In 2024, the ground floor was transformed: the front office became a back office. The interior designer opted for an open ceiling without suspended ceilings, which meant that the existing recessed luminaires (U3) no longer fitted.

ETAP offered a circular and efficient solution:

  • From recessed to suspended luminaires: the U3 luminaires were cleverly reused and converted to suspended luminaires.
     
  • Smart frames for recessed luminaires: Instead of replacing everything, ETAP provided frames to sustainably integrate the existing luminaires.
     
  • Seamless connection to existing systems: Excellum and ESM, already in use since 2021, continue to provide efficient lighting management and reliable emergency lighting.

The installation was done without disruption to daily operations, allowing employees to continue working as usual..

 

Minimum environmental footprint, maximum performance

By reusing the existing luminaires, ETAP avoids unnecessary waste and reduces its ecological footprint. Moreover, the modified luminaires remain part of the C-LaaS contract. As a result, the performance guarantee continues and the city of Sint-Niklaas continues to enjoy energy-efficient and worry-free lighting.
