How to maintain architectural heritage while bringing it to nowadays LED standards? That was the challenge while renovating the lighting of the Utrecht University Educatorium, designed by Rem Koolhaas from OMA Architects. The building – completed in 1995 - houses 2 auditoria and 3 examination rooms, among others. Starting in 2020, the lighting in the Educatorium was renovated to comply with new requirements. To foster an optimal learning environment, the university demands an illuminance level of 750 lux in all examination rooms and auditoriums.

The use of several different ETAP ranges allowed to meet the illumination requirements and reinforce the distinct design of the different spaces at the same time.

• In the Gamma examination room the ceiling and luminaires designed by the architect had to be preserved to keep the unique atmosphere. To achieve this, the original luminaires were refurbished. The original fluorescent tubes were replaced by custom made LED modules, keeping the luminaire housing and the ceiling intact.
• In the Megaron auditorium Ley architectural light lines are used. The luminaires with Shielded Lens optics are suspended between the ceiling beams. Thanks to the black housing, only the light is visible in the black ceiling.
• The Beta examination room is lit by luminaires from the U3 range. Also using Shielded Lens optics, the light integrates discretely in the ceiling to create a bright room with a soothing ambiance.

To ensure not only a pleasant but also a safe learning environment, K9 signage luminaires are used throughout the building. With its minimalistic design, K9 integrates nicely in the different spaces. The emergency lighting is connected to an ESM wireless system to easily keep an overview of the status of the emergency luminaires.
